Everything around us is continuously changing. The key to success is to be part of that change; to be able to keep pace with it. The resume styles too have changed quite a bit over the past decade. It is important that you are aware of these changes so you could adapt to the new trends if you are serious about landing a job.
1. Social Media Friendly Resumes – Recruiters and prospective employees often seek to know the person beyond the “official” façade. Hence, the resume has become integrated – in most cases – with the social media. Many companies today use and reply of social networks to research/review applicants before recruiting. Make sure your social media account portrays the right picture.
2. Unique Selling Proposition (USP) – This is a term normally used by brand builders; and also a term you need to be familiar with because you need to build your brand. Every time you write a resume for a job you need to have a USP that should make you stand out in the crowd. This USP should tell your prospective recruiter why you are the best match for the job – and hence, the reason he should hire YOU.
3. Put in the High-Tech Stuff – This is critical if you are applying for any type of position that is technology or marketing oriented. You need to come across as a technology savvy person. Get a QR code on your resume. A QR code is a barcode similar to what you see on products you pick up in the market. Add your URL to this QR Code (of course, for that you need to have a website as well). Remember: your website and QR Code should be easily accessible on mobile and tablet – as these would be the devices where your prospective employer would check the resume out.
4. Use Testimonials Instead of References – The standard “References would be provided on request” is no longer the best option. Use testimonials instead – from your past employees, people who matter in the industry, people who know you in general. Look up LinkedIn to check out what testimonials should look like. Put a few of the most powerful and targeted to the position you are applying for, right at the top of your resume.
It takes a little extra effort to make that difference, but that little effort will give you the extra boost you need to land the job.
