A large and raucous crowd greeted Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan on Monday at the Iowa State Fair. A fair tradition is the soapbox, a small stage set up in the middle of the fair where politicians of every stripe are given 20 minutes to speak to the crowd. It’s intended to be a place where discourse is civil and respectful. But not on Monday afternoon. Just as Ryan reached the stage, he was met with cheers from supporters and catcalls from a small but vocal minority intent on shouting him down.
