This article describes the positive and negative effects of social media on a college graduate’s job search. The author stresses how important it is to develop one’s own online brand. Todd Van Hoosear, a professor of communication at BU, is an expert in the field of social media and public relations. He is an executive at a PR company called Fresh Ground, and a member of the Social Media Club. He advises students to establish an online presence, to be careful about the types of posts they put on Facebook and Twitter, to upload a youtube video or at least a photo of themselves online, and to make their names bubble up to the top of Google search results (in an appropriate way, of course).
